First Kurdish Book Fair Held in the United Kingdom

11 April 2025 Manchester, UK Dakok Support Centre 1 min read

The Dakok Support Centre, in collaboration with the Mawlawi Cultural Centre, hosted the first Kurdish book fair in the United Kingdom, held in Manchester in memory of the Kurdish journalist Wrya Hamekareem and his contributions to Kurdish media, identity and linguistic freedom.

The fair was designed to nurture a reading culture among the Kurdish community and to celebrate Kurdish-language literature, showcasing fiction, non-fiction, poetry, children's literature and academic texts at symbolic prices to ensure accessibility for all.

Its organisers presented the event as the first step toward establishing an annual Kurdish book fair across the UK, and as a platform to advocate for the inclusion of Kurdish-language collections in public libraries so that Kurdish literary heritage remains visible to future generations.
