Amedspor defeated Trabzonspor 2–1 in Diyarbakır, securing not only three points but a significant victory that came in the shadow of an incident in Trabzon the day before, when a woman wearing an Amedspor shirt was verbally attacked.
On 29 August, a woman wearing an Amedspor shirt was reportedly subjected to verbal abuse in Trabzon. Footage shared on social media appeared to show several people demanding that she remove her shirt and referring to her as a “terrorist”. In the footage, the woman responded: “I am not a terrorist. I am from Diyarbakır.” Amedspor subsequently condemned the incident and called for legal action.
The incident once again highlighted why Amedspor is seen by many Kurds as more than a football club. For many Kurdish people, Amedspor has become a powerful symbol of the city, culture, identity and belonging. An Amedspor shirt is therefore not simply a football shirt for many of its supporters; it can represent where they come from and who they are.
When that identity is met with hostility or exclusion, the issue goes beyond football rivalry. Telling someone to remove their shirt, targeting them because of their identity, or labelling them a “terrorist” is unacceptable.
Amedspor’s response came on the pitch.
Trabzonspor took the lead in the 11th minute, but Amedspor fought back and Yira Sor equalised just before half-time. Then, in the 90th minute, Gift Orban scored the decisive goal to complete a dramatic 2–1 comeback victory.
More Than a Football Match
For Amedspor supporters, the victory was about more than the final score. It can be seen as a symbolic reminder that identity does not have to be hidden in order to belong in football or in society.
However, an important distinction must be made: the incident in Trabzon should not be attributed to the entire city or to all Trabzonspor supporters. Amedspor itself called for restraint, emphasising that the actions of individuals should not be used to generalise about an entire city, club or fanbase.
Football rivalry is normal. Passionate support is normal. Wanting your team to defeat its opponent is part of the game. But humiliating or threatening someone because of their identity or the shirt they choose to wear is something entirely different.
Amedspor answered on the pitch.
Final score: Amedspor 2–1 Trabzonspor.
Three points stayed in Diyarbakır. But beyond the result, the match offered a reminder that identity has a place in football — and no one should be made to feel ashamed of who they are.
Amedspor is more than a football club for many people; it is a symbol of belonging, a city and a Kurdish identity.
