Mehdi Zana, one of the prominent figures of Kurdish political history and former Mayor of Diyarbakır, has died at the age of 85.

His death is being remembered not simply as the passing of a politician, but as the loss of a figure who witnessed and lived through one of the most difficult periods in modern Kurdish political history.

In tributes following his death, Zana has been described as “the name of will, the symbol of resistance, the voice of conscience and the light of Kurdistan.”

His life was shaped by years of political struggle, imprisonment and exile. Yet for those who remember him, Mehdi Zana is defined not only by the hardships he endured, but by his determination and the stance he maintained in the face of them.

The Kurdish tribute shared following his death portrays Zana as a person who did not retreat during difficult times, who witnessed the suffering of his people and who continued to express his struggle through both his words and his pen.

“His name will live on in future generations”

The poetic tribute to Mehdi Zana carries a message to future generations, expressing the belief that his name will continue to live in the memory of the Kurdish people.

It speaks of a legacy that should not be forgotten and of a promise to carry his name and memory forward.

In this sense, Mehdi Zana’s life is not simply a story belonging to the past. It represents a historical testimony connected to Kurdish identity, language, freedom, political struggle and collective memory.

A struggle also carried through his writing

Alongside his political life, Mehdi Zana documented his experiences through his writing.

His years in prison, the repression he experienced and his political journey became an important part of his literary work. Through his writings, his experiences became more than personal memories; they became part of the historical record of one of the most difficult periods of Kurdish political life.

Today, the tributes following his death share a common message:

A person may leave this world, but the mark they leave on the memory of their people can continue to live on.

Mehdi Zana leaves such a mark.

Will. Resistance. The pen. Memory.

As the tribute written in his memory expresses, his name will continue to live not only in the memory of one generation, but in the generations that follow.

Our condolences to his family, loved ones and all those who mourn his loss.

May he rest in peace.
