DEM Party Co-Mayors Detained Over a Banner Featuring Braided Hair

28 January 2026 Mush, Turkey 12Punto 1 min read

DEM Party co-mayors of Malazgirt in Muş, Gülistan Özel and Ahmet Kenan Türker, have been detained on charges of engaging in terrorist organization propaganda after police raided their homes.

The Malazgirt Chief Public Prosecutor's Office said the investigation concerned a banner hung on the municipal building against attacks on northern and eastern Syria, which featured braided hair and the slogan "Jin, jiyan, azadî" — "Woman, life, freedom".

The party said that the unlawful attitudes of law enforcement and the judiciary had once again been exposed, and that if a culprit was to be sought, it should be sought among those committing crimes against humanity in Rojava, not among elected mayors.

The co-mayors called for their immediate release and an end to what they described as unlawful practices. (12Punto)
