Tensions Rise in Northeastern Syria as Kurdish Region Faces New Changes

Tensions have increased in northeastern Syria as the country’s interim government continues efforts to integrate Kurdish-led institutions and forces into the central state.

On Wednesday, protesters blocked a major highway near Tal Tamr, leaving hundreds of oil tanker trucks stranded. The demonstrations were partly triggered by rising fuel prices, while concerns over Kurdish rights and recent political developments have also contributed to growing discontent.

The protests come as the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) move towards integration with Syria’s national military and previously autonomous civilian institutions are transferred towards central government control.

The transition has raised questions among Kurdish communities about the future of political, cultural and security arrangements that developed during years of self-administration.

Another issue is the future of the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ). According to AP, negotiations concerning the integration of the women-led Kurdish force remain unresolved, partly because Damascus has been reluctant to maintain women in combat roles within the national security structure.

The developments follow an agreement aimed at ending conflict and establishing a framework for integration. While the process has made progress, tensions remain over fuel prices, education, security structures and Kurdish rights.

The coming months are expected to be important for determining how the new arrangements will work in practice and how Kurdish institutions and communities will be represented within the Syrian state.
