The Kurdistan Regional Government has launched the Kurdistan Biodiversity Project under the Kurdistan Foundation's Climate.KRD initiative in a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Masrour Barzani.
The project has so far documented 2,252 species across the Kurdistan Region, including 1,408 plant species and 844 animal species. It covers 19 biodiversity hotspot areas across Erbil, Duhok, Sulaymaniyah and Halabja.
Eight scientists and researchers are contributing to the effort, which aims to build a comprehensive scientific record of the region's ecosystems and make findings publicly accessible.
