The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) came first in the Kurdistan Region's parliamentary election, winning 39 of 100 seats, the election commission said. The rival Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) was second with 23 seats, while the opposition New Generation Movement came third with 15 seats, up from eight in 2018.
Turnout among registered voters was reported at 72 percent. The vote for the 100-seat parliament, five seats of which are reserved for minority groups, had originally been planned for 2022 but was repeatedly delayed by disputes between the two ruling parties.
With opposition parties still fragmented, the KDP and PUK, which have shared power since 1992, are likely to continue governing together, but the results position Masoud Barzani's KDP to take a dominant role. (Reuters)
