Traditional Attire (Kiras & Şal û Şapik)

1 min read

Traditional Kurdish clothing is an important part of Kurdish culture, identity and heritage. Styles vary across different regions of Kurdistan, with distinctive colours, fabrics and designs reflecting local traditions.

Kiras is a traditional Kurdish dress commonly worn by women. It is often characterised by its long, flowing design and may be decorated with colourful fabrics, embroidery, intricate patterns and traditional accessories. Different regions have their own distinctive styles of Kiras.

Şal û Şapik is a traditional Kurdish men’s outfit, consisting primarily of a loose-fitting shirt and trousers, often worn with a matching sash or belt. It has been especially associated with Kurdish communities in northern and western parts of Kurdistan and remains an important symbol of Kurdish heritage.

Traditional Kurdish attire is still worn during Newroz celebrations, weddings, festivals and other cultural gatherings. Today, it represents more than traditional dress—it is a visible expression of Kurdish identity, history, craftsmanship and cultural continuity.

From generation to generation, these garments have helped preserve Kurdish traditions and remain an important part of Kurdish cultural heritage both in Kurdistan and among Kurdish communities around the world.
