Newroz (The Kurdish New Year)

1 min read

Newroz, the Kurdish New Year, is celebrated every year on 21 March, marking the arrival of spring and the spring equinox. With traditions dating back more than 2,700 years, Newroz is one of the most important celebrations in Kurdish culture.

For Kurdish people, Newroz represents freedom, rebirth, hope and liberation from tyranny. Its traditional story is associated with Kawa the Blacksmith (Kawayê Hesinkar), who is said to have led an uprising against the tyrannical ruler Dehak. According to the legend, Kawa’s victory marked the beginning of a new era of freedom.

The lighting of Newroz fires is one of the most recognisable traditions. The flames symbolise the triumph of light over darkness, freedom over oppression, and hope over despair.

Today, Kurds around the world celebrate Newroz with bonfires, traditional clothing, Kurdish music and dance, poetry, food, and cultural gatherings.

Newroz is not simply the beginning of a new year. It is a celebration of Kurdish identity, culture, resilience and the enduring hope for freedom.

Newroz pîroz be! — Happy Newroz!
