Bedirhan Bey

c. 1803 - 1869 Ruler of the Botan Emirate & Leader of the 1847 Uprising 1 min read

Bedirhan Bey was the last great ruler of the Botan Emirate, a powerful Kurdish principality centred on Cizre in what is now south-eastern Turkey. For over two decades he governed as an independent prince, at the height of his power commanding authority over vast stretches of Kurdistan and enjoying relative autonomy on the frontiers of the Ottoman Empire.

A skilful administrator and warrior, Bedirhan sought to preserve Kurdish self-rule as the Ottoman state pushed to centralise and dismantle the Kurdish emirates. His cause culminated in the great 1847 uprising, when he united most of the Kurdish principalities and fought the Ottoman army to defend the independence of Kurdistan. After months of resistance he was defeated and taken into captivity.

Bedirhan Bey was banished to exile, where he died, and his emirate was abolished. Though his revolt failed, he became the first enduring symbol of unified Kurdish resistance to central authority. His name lives on through his descendants - the Bedirxan family - who went on to become the most celebrated intellectual dynasty of the Kurdish national movement.
