Mela Mustafa Barzani

1903 - 1979 Founder & Leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party 1 min read

Mela Mustafa Barzani was born in the rugged mountain heartland of Barzan and rose to become the most iconic and enduring leader of the modern Kurdish national movement. Raised among the Barzani tribal confederacy, he combined religious learning with a natural gift for guerrilla command that would make him a legend across Kurdistan.

He fought alongside the Mahabad Republic in 1946 and, in its collapse, led a celebrated armed retreat of thousands of Kurds to the Soviet Union. Returning to Iraq, he founded the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) - the party that remains at the heart of Kurdish political life - and became the symbolic embodiment of armed resistance against successive Iraqi governments.

Barzani led the famous 1961 Revolution and secured a historic 1970 autonomy agreement for Iraqi Kurdistan. Though forced into exile after the 1975 Algiers Agreement, his legacy endured: his leadership forged a genuine Kurdish national identity and laid the foundations for the autonomous Kurdish region that exists in Iraq today.
