Aliser Efendi

1862 - 1937 Koçgiri Poet-Leader & Organiser of the Koçgiri and Dersim Uprisings 1 min read

Aliser Efendi was born in the Koçgiri region of Sivas and combined the soul of a poet with the mind of a revolutionary tactician, becoming one of the most remarkable Kurdish leaders of the early 20th century. Trusted as guardian of the Koçgiri tribal leadership, he used his intelligence and eloquence to unite the tribes of Dersim behind a common cause of Kurdish rights.

Aliser was the ideological organiser and true driving force behind the great 1921 Koçgiri uprising, and his role in it was so central that the authorities pursued him for years. He then sought refuge in Dersim, where alongside Seyid Riza he helped lead the 1937 Dersim uprising, composing poetry and rallying the rebels with his words until the very end.

When the uprising collapsed, Aliser was betrayed and murdered in a cave near Ovacık together with his wife Zarife. Their deaths together became a tragedy etched into Kurdish memory. Aliser is remembered as a charismatic poet-leader who gave the Kurdish resistance both a voice and a strategy, and whose sacrifice made him a lasting emblem of the Kurdish struggle.
